Etta Baker, one of the world's premier Piedmont-style blues guitarists died September 24, 2006 in
Fairfax, Virginia. She was born Etta Lucille Reid in
Caldwell County, North Carolina, on March 31, 1913. Baker was a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts and also had recorded with Taj Mahal. Baker was raised in a musical family in
North Carolina. She worked in a textile mill for 26 years before quitting at age 60 to pursue a career as a professional musician. Baker also is to appear on blues-rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd's next album due out in November.
